Where to Find Purple Martins

How do you know if you live where purple martins visit? Well, here are some answers. Purple martins can be found in nearly every state of the US and in Southern Canada. An exception is the Great Basin area in the West. The map below shows the parts of the US and Southern Canada that the Eastern purple martin will range.

This map was prepared by The North American Breeding Bird Survey, BBS. The map displays counts of purple martins "on a typical 2.5 hour bird walk along a country road" and is based upon 1966 - 2003 data. The BBS also produced an interesting trend map showing growth and decline of the purple martin population in the US and Canada over the years 1966 - 2003. The trends may surprise you.
